Para kay House Deputy Speaker Loren Legarda, malaking parte ng pag-unlad at pagbangon ng Pilipinas sa COVID-19 pandemic ang agrikultura.

Kaya naman sinuportahan ni Legarda ang pagtatag ng Department of Education ng mga farm school sa Western Visayas.

Isa si Legarda sa co-author ng Rural Farms Act (Republic Act 10618), na naglalayong bumuo ng mga rural farm school para maging alternatibong delivery mode ng secondary education.

“With our ageing farming workforce and the declining interest of our youth to engage in the agriculture sector, we have to look for ways to reinforce their interest, knowledge and appreciation of farming system and practices,” ayon sa mambabatas.

Aniya pa, mahalaga rin na ipaintindi sa kabataan ang kahalagahan ng kalikasan, na isa rin sa pangunahing adhikain ng Environmental Awareness and Education Act (RA 9512) kung saan isa rin si Legarda sa co-author.

“The future of agriculture and the country’s food security is in the hands of our youth,” sambit pa ni Legarda.

“We need them to be engaged and motivated. If the agriculture sector collapses, it would also mean that our food security is at risk.”
