Naglagay ang ilang miyembro ng Joint Task Force Tawi-Tawi at Second Marine Brigade ng isang sovereignty marker sa Panguan Island, sa Barangay Datu Putih, Sitangkai, Tawi-Tawi noong Disyembre 24.

Ayon sa Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom), ang sovereignty marker ay tanda na ang isla ay pagmamay-ari at pinamamahalaan ng Pilipinas.

Ang Panguan, na tinatawag ng mga taga-roon na ‘Panggungan’ ay malayo sa sentro ng lalawigan at halos malapit na rin sa teritoryo ng katabing bansa.

“As an exercise of sovereignty, the marker demonstrates the belongingness of the maritime feature and its inhabitants to one country,” wika ni JTF Task Force Commander Brig. Gen. Romeo Racadio.

“The local government needs to place one, because, Panguan or locally called ‘Panggungan’, is too remote from the provincial seat of government but in close proximity to another foreign place,” dagdag pa ni Racadio.

“Now, the island is the home of an eighty-household community of Sama-Badjaos whose children are educated by the civilians and military personnel of the marine detachment stationed thereat,” aniya. (mjd)
