Pinasisiyasat ni Senador Leila de Lima sa Senado ang desisyon ng Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) na alisin ang ban sa open-pit mining sa bansa.

Naghain si De Lima ng resolusyon na humihiling na rebyuhin ang naturang desisyon at maghanap ng ibang paraan para kumita ang gobyerno sa likas na yaman ng bansa na hindi makokompormiso ang kaligtasan ng tao at pagkasari sa gobyerno.

“There is a need to conduct a thorough review of this policy decision as this can potentially open up the country once more to irresponsible mining practices which could further compromise the environment and pose health and safety risks to people and their communities,” sabi ni De Lima.

“It behooves our government to exert all efforts to explore other avenues before resorting to possibly catastrophic means of generating wealth for our country at the cost of sustainability and the welfare of present and future Filipinos,” dagdag nito.

Noong Disyembre 23, 2021, nilagdaan ni DENR Secretary Roy Cimatu ang Department Administrative Order No. 2021-40, na nag-aalis sa apat na taong ban sa open-pit mining na sinimulan ng dating administrasyon.

Bagama’t kinukonsidera ng gobyerno ang nasabing hakbang bilang daan para maingat ang ekonomiya ng bansa sa gitna ng pandemya, binatikos naman ng mga environmental group ang naturang desisyon bilang “shortsighted and misplaced development priority of the government.”

Ang open-pit mining ay isang uri ng pagmimina na labis na nakakasira sa kalikasan tulad na nangyaring trahediya noong 1996 sa Marcopper mining sa lalawigan ng Marinduque.
Dalawang dekado matapos ang Marcopper incident, lima lang mining disaster ang naitala sa bansa.

“It is evident from the numerous mining disasters that have occurred in the country that we have still yet to figure out how to consistently extract our mineral resources in a safe and efficient manner and reduce or altogether prevent such accidents from occurring,” sabi ni De Lima.
